Blending Technology Into the Language Arts Classroom

The 2014-15 Expository Literary Journal is Done!!!

My project today:  Putting together this year’s literary journal for my college comp students.  Next year, I MUST teach them how to do this on their own!

I do enjoy it, though.  There are some great essays in here, and many others that, due to publishing limitations, just didn’t make the cut.  Each student could only submit one, so many great pieces of writing produced this year aren’t in the book but were still amazing.

If you want to order a hard copy or PDF for your e-reader, go to Blurb via the links below:

    Hi Melissa-

I stumbled onto your blog via Edublogger, and I’m thrilled to find this wonderful resource you’ve already discovered. I’m curious if you purchase the opportunity to create one single book and then allow your students to buy said book through the Blurb link. I would love to use this tech tool to assemble a collection of writing from my students–perhaps even all of our sixth grade writers. I’ll give it a try over the summer, but if you have any recommendations or guidance, I’d love to hear words of wisdom from an LA teacher who’s already mastered this. Thanks so much.

That’s exactly what I do, Martha. Actually I purchase a few copies of the book–one for the school library, and then a copy for the other English classrooms in our rural high school. Then I post the Blurb link on our school website, on Facebook (for the parents whom I’m Facebook friends with–I teach in a small town of 3000 people, so this connects to a LOT of parents), and on Twitter (which is mainly to my students). Then they can order one if they’d like.

My principal and I are also planning to work with our local indie bookstore to carry a few copies for sale in the future. He will also order his copies from Blurb–then if he wants to order more at a later date, he can do so. The convenience is really great!

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!!!
